**Your autonomic nervous system is running the show.** Your autonomic nervous system controls everything — your heart rate, your digestion, your hormonal output, your immune function, your sleep, your mood, your metabolism. And it is controlled by your unconscious mind. Not the conscious mind you think is in charge. The one running at 11 million bits of information per second below your awareness — the one that formed its views about safety, threat, worth and belonging before you were old enough to argue with it. **The amygdala — your ancient alarm system.** Deep in your brain sits the amygdala. Its one job is to detect threat and fire the alarm. In a dangerous world, this is brilliant. It kept your ancestors alive. In your world — where the threat is a difficult email, a performance review, the fear of not being enough, the weight of everyone depending on you — the amygdala cannot tell the difference between a sabre-toothed tiger and a passive-aggressive Slack message. **It fires anyway.** And it fires based on the programmes your unconscious formed decades ago. The belief that you are not safe. That you need to prove yourself. That people leave. That rest is not deserved. That something is wrong with you. **The cortisol cascade — and where your hormones went.** Every time the amygdala fires — every time the unconscious belief triggers the alarm — cortisol surges. Cortisol is a brilliant emergency hormone. Short term, it saves you. Long term it triggers inflammation, immune system issues, fat retention and a myriad of chronic diseases.  **But yours has been running chronically. For decades. Because the alarm never got the signal to stand down.** *And here is the part that changes everything about perimenopause.* Cortisol and progesterone are made from the same raw material: pregnenolone. Think of pregnenolone like a kitchen with one chef and two hungry diners. Cortisol is demanding, loud and always first in the queue. Progesterone is patient, quiet and keeps getting elbowed out. **This is called the pregnenolone steal.** When your unconscious is running a chronic threat programme — which it has been, because that is what decades of 'not enough' and 'need to prove' and 'stay alert' habit does — cortisol takes the pregnenolone. Progesterone goes without. **What low progesterone and high cortsiol does to you — in perimenopause specifically:** → Hot flashes and night sweats — progesterone was moderating your thermoregulatory response → Insomnia and 3am waking — progesterone is sedating and calming; without it, your nervous system cannot fully go offline → Anxiety — progesterone acts on GABA receptors, your brain's natural calming system → Mood crashes and rage — the oestrogen/progesterone ratio becomes chaotic → Weight gain in the midsection — cortisol is a fat-storage hormone with four times more receptors in the belly than anywhere else → Brain fog — chronic cortisol impairs the prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for thinking clearly **Your perimenopause is not just a hormonal event.** It is a subconscious programme — formed long before perimenopause arrived — expressing itself through your entire endocrine system. **Why perimenopause made it worse — and why that is actually an opportunity.** Oestrogen was quietly helping to moderate the amygdala. Keeping the alarm a little quieter. As oestrogen declines — the moderator withdraws. The alarm that was already too sensitive now runs without any buffer. This is why the anxiety that was at 4/10 for years is suddenly at 9/10. Why the things you were managing now feel unmanageable. But — and this is what nobody tells you: **Perimenopause also opens the most significant window of neuroplasticity your brain has experienced since adolescence.** Neuroplasticity is your brain's ability to form new neural pathways — to literally rewire itself. In perimenopause, the same hormonal reorganisation that is causing the symptoms is also making the brain more changeable, more plastic, more open to new programmes than it has been in decades. **The programmes that have been running your nervous system for 30 or 40 years are more accessible to dissolve right now than they have ever been in your adult life.**

What actually works...

(Spoiler: it’s not another supplement.) Your brain is not fixed. It is plastic — constantly forming and reforming neural pathways based on experience, repetition and, crucially, the right kind of intervention. The problem with most approaches is they try to change the road from the surface. Therapy gives you understanding of why the road exists. Breathwork slows your car down temporarily. Supplements smooth out the tarmac a little. Mindfulness teaches you to notice you’re on the road at all. Useful. All of it. But the road is still there. Psychotherapy and neural reprogramming work differently. How I do it. My Somatic Sense™ method.
