Hi my name is Lianne, and I was like you.
In mid to late 40s, I felt I had finally earned the right to enjoy my life and my wins. My kids were bit older - I could be a bit less hands on - and had the opportunity to have a second wind in my career. But instead my anxiety was skyrocketing and my brain started to stall.
I'd had undiagnosed (but very well managed) chronic anxiety for years (and ADHD) which resulted in IBS for almost 20 years and latterly psoriasis. Both related to anxiety.
I was an anxious high achiever, a science graduate, an award winning national newspaper and magazine journalist (Cosmopolitan, Grazia, Glamour, Elle), multiple business owner and the very energy and patterns that motivated me and drove me forward also kept me in anxiety loops. Always moving forward and never arriving. My system was so used to this constant motion it forgot how to relax, how to stop, only finding stillness and purpose in doing more.
When I hit my 40s my anxiety and ADHD symptoms (I didn’t even recognise as ADHD until I noticed it in family members) flared, I just kept moving forward, coping, trying multiple ‘Google says’ strategies that rarely scratched the surface, not understanding why until I used my hyperfocus on deep research and training in holistic solutions for others with anxiety and ADHD.
I was very fortunate as by applying the solutions I found drawn from neuroscience, neuropsychology, psychotherapy, somatic healing, diet, supplementation (originally meant for ADHD) to myself I was able to prevent my anxiety and ADHD going nuclear and reduce many of the common issues of peri-menopause. As I didn’t know it, but I WAS experiencing the start of peri-menopause - when oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels all start to fluctuate wildly and, the loss of oestrogen in particular, kickstarts a major transformation of female brain matter and neural pathways - usually resulting in much worse anxiety and ADHD symptoms. Women with ADHD tend to go into peri-menopause earlier than others and experience it worse. (Thanks!)
The cognitive shifts are some of the least discussed aspects of peri-menopause and often the most debilitating - especially if you are like me and pride yourself on your brain, intellect, memory for detail and cognitive flexibility to shift through multiple tasks and thought processes at once. The one who runs it all at work, home, is across multiple teams, juggling endless schedules and making sense of it all.
And then it goes. Brain fog descends, details disappear, thoughts can no longer be followed or strung together and your brain feels like someone poured UHU in. Self-doubt, second-guessing, procrastination and anxiety invades everything. Your former inner joy flatlines, mood swings, internal rage and overwhelm take over. Major decisions you used to make over your morning latte take hours and you feel a panic rising. You may even fear dementia.
You had just made it professionally and personally and now it feels like if you don’t get a handle on this, it could all slip away. Yes, maybe you’ve always been an anxious high achiever - but this is next level.
You reach for solutions you found on CHAT GPT, box breathing, saunas, gong baths, yoga, meditation, go see someone about your adrenal glands (which are likely in fatigue) but the anxiety is still hovering at 8/10. You''ve even got anxiety about your anxiety!
If you do have other physical symptoms of peri-menopause you feel you could probably handle them (although yes it would be lovely to have them abate, especially the insomnia) but you mostly want the anxiety, inner rage and self-doubt to go so you can get back to being you.
Biggest opportunity since puberty
